CDWR SUPPORTS AND SOLIDARISES WITH THE STRIKING LECTURERS OF LAGOS STATE OWNED UNIVERSITIES

CDWR CALLS ON LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT TO IMMEDIATELY IMPLEMENT 2025 ASUU-FGN AGREEMENT IN LAGOS STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES

The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR) supports the strike action embarked upon by lecturers of the Lagos State-owned Universities in their struggle to win the full implementation and domestication of the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government Agreement including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA).

This strike was embarked upon after expiration of strike notice and deadline issued by the Lagos State-owned Universities Joint Campus Group of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to the Lagos State Government that lapsed on September 10, 2026. The lecturers embarked on the strike action because the Lagos State Government refused to engage the lecturers in any meaningful way including the refusal to implement the 2025 Agreement. Hence, Lagos State government should be blamed for the strike action and the disruption of academic activities in Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).

It is a fact that Lagos State Government has enough resources to meet and implement the agreement including funding education adequately to guarantee free and quality education for all. What is militating against this social responsibility is the neo-liberal agenda that relegates social services to the background and open them to commercialisation and private interest. CDWR demands the adequate funding of social welfare programmes including education, healthcare, housing etc., to meet the needs of all. If Lagos were to be a country, it would be the 8th largest economy in Africa but it has very little to show for it.

We appeal to students, parents and the general public to actively support the struggle of the lecturers with the aim of forcing the government to meet their demands. We also call on the striking lecturers to make the strike an active one such that they hold program of activities that include protests, rallies, press conferences etc., as a means of rallying and mobilizing public support to save public education. They should also include in their demands the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of ASUU-LASU who have been politically victimized for the past seven years by the LASU management and the state government.

We also call on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and pro-labour organisations to actively support the strike action and the overall struggle to save public education from collapse.
