CDWR CONDEMNS FG’S FAILURE TO MEET ASUU’S DEMANDS AND ADEQUATELY FUND EDUCATION

CDWR SUPPORTS THE STRIKE ACTION

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on another strike action due to the government’s refusal to meet its demands. The one-month strike started on Monday, February 14, 2022 following the resolution of its National Executive meeting held at UNILAG on February 12 and 13, 2022.

Some of the reasons for the strike action are government’s refusal to implement agreements signed with the union; haphazard payment of Academic Earned Allowance etc.

The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR) condemns the Buhari-led federal government’s refusal to meet ASUU’s demands. We also condemn government’s poor funding of education, which is the primary cause of the strike actions. We demand government meets ASUU demands immediately so that the public universities resume academic work. We also demand adequate public funding of education and democratic management of schools to guarantee free and quality education at all levels.

The CDWR calls on Nigerians to support the strike. We also call on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to give active solidarity to the strike action.
