Socialist Trade Unionist Elected at PERESSA Delegate Conference

The Precision Electrical and Related Equipment Senior Staff Association (PERESSA), affiliated with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had its 8th Triennial Delegate Conference on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 where a Socialist trade unionist, comrade Rufus Olusesan, was elected as president. Comrade Rufus is a leading member of the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) and national chairperson of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR).

PERESSA was registered in 1980. Years of neglect have led to membership loss leaving just 9 branches with fewer members compared to some other unions. It was apparently in a bid to prevent the union from going into extinction that members unanimously decided to elect a leader like Comrade Rufus with a track record of building and fighting for members’ interests.

Despite the obvious weakness in the union in terms of membership, an advantage however exists of building from small without rancorous bureaucratic interest. There is an urgent need to build the union into a more formidable one. The trade union movement is in dire need of radical leadership considering the dominance of pro-capitalist leadership and continuous betrayal of the working class by the rightwing trade union leaders. A striking example, though small, could inspire workers to struggle for a fighting leadership and continue to resist and replace the current rightwing trade union leaders across the trade union movement.
