OUR POSITION ON THE NCP NCC PROPOSAL TO ENDORSE GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI AS THE PARTY’S PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR 2007 GENERAL ELECTIONS.

Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Dear Sir,
OUR POSITION ON THE NCP NCC PROPOSAL TO ENDORSE GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI AS THE PARTY’S PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR 2007 GENERAL ELECTIONS.

Sequel to the last National Conscience Party (NCP) National Coordinating Council (NCC) meeting held on the 9th of December, 2006 at Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s Chamber in Lagos, the Oyo State NCP leadership called a State Coordinating Council (SCC) and Organisers’ meeting on the 16th of December, 2007 at the Party Secretariat, where we painstakingly debated and discussed the State’s position. Hence, the following positions as concerning the proposal to endorse General Muhammadu Buhari (Nigeria’s former Head of State) as the Party’s Presidential Candidate for 2007 were agreed on:

(1) That the Oyo state chapter of the NCP is categorically opposed to the very idea of the NCP adopting general Buhari as the party’s presidential candidate and calls on the national leadership of the party to abandon the idea outright.

(2) That to us, NCP remains a pro-masses party founded on principles and basic ideological background as the platform for the masses to abolish man-made poverty orchestrated by the oppressors of our society.

(3) That having carefully perused the document of Coalition for New Nigeria (CNN), we make bold to say that as beautiful and laudable the programmes and ideals may look like, it is not realistic with a Political Party like All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) whose economic philosophy is not in anyway different from that of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that has plunged the masses of this country into an abysmal pit of poverty and wretchedness.

(4) That NCP as a pro-masses party stands the risk of being used and dumped with a dented and muddy image by this so-called alliance of convenience, giving the characters of Nigerian bourgeois Politicians who control the structure of ANPP.

(5) That we regard as shameful the rigorous efforts being made in recent period to promote General Buhari as an anti-corruption campaigner (a prerequisite to qualify him for NCP candidature) while no single mention is made of his virulent and despotic anti-democratic background as former military ruler.

(6) That any attempt to present an individual, as the key to solving the crises plaguing the masses rather than the initiative and collective will and action of the masses, organized within the framework of a pro-masses party like the NCP or other similar pro-masses formations is counter-productive and would only further deepen the woes of the masses and demoralised the genuine fighting spirit of change-seekers, like Gani Fawehinmi who have committed their whole life to this singular effort of building an independent pro-masses political organisation.

We can only align with those who are genuinely committed to the ideas of a true liberation of the masses, not a member of a section of the ruling elite, who are mainly disgruntled and oppose their fellow ruling elites in power from the point of view that they presently do not control the central disburse of the national cake.

Signed
Chris Daramola
